Significant savings observed in insurance changes

Decatur officials have decided to make a health insurance coverage change in August, which will result in “significant savings” for the city.

At its Tuesday meeting, the city council unanimously voted to go with United Healthcare Medical Trust, joining over 70 other Indiana communities that have already switched.

“It’s a pretty significant savings,” Mayor Dan Rickord said.

“Yes, the cost savings are significant,” stated City Attorney Anne Razo.

The change will be made on August 1, when the current insurance contract expires.

According to the mayor, recent coverage increases have been in the double digits, as was last year’s.

Rickord and Clerk-Treasurer Eran Hackman met with officials from the insurance program.

Furthermore, it was reported that Deputy Clerk Treasurer Wendi Gephart contacted some of the 72 Indiana communities in this area that are already part of the health coverage plan, “and all gave it glowing marks,” Hackman stated.

“I think it’s a good thing to do,” said council member Jenny Bower-Shultz, who then proposed the change. Councilman Tyler Fullenkamp seconded, and the vote to switch was 5-0.
