Severe Thunderstorms Target Southwest Kansas Friday Evening

Garden City, Kan. – Strong storms are sweeping across southwest Kansas this evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. for six counties: Grant, Hamilton, Kearny, Morton, Stanton, and Stevens. Forecasters warn the line of storms will intensify through the evening, bringing the risk of wind gusts over 60 mph, hail up to quarter size, and heavy downpours.

Emergency managers caution that the combination of high winds and hail could produce isolated power outages and hazardous travel, especially where the most intense cores pass. Rapid storm development is expected, with stronger cells capable of producing sudden bursts of damaging wind and brief but torrential rain.

Travel impacts are a primary concern along U.S. Highways 56 and 160, where reduced visibility from sheets of rain may occur with little notice. Blowing debris is possible as outflow winds surge ahead of the storms. In Stevens County, officials are urging residents to secure outdoor items—such as patio furniture, trash bins, and equipment—and remain indoors as the strongest cells move through.

Residents across southwest Kansas are encouraged to keep mobile devices charged in case of power interruptions, monitor local alerts, and be ready to move to safe shelter if warnings are issued. Even outside of warned storms, lightning can be dangerous; the safest place during thunderstorms is inside a sturdy building away from windows.

Drivers should slow down in heavy rain, allow extra stopping distance, and never attempt to cross flooded roadways. Hydroplaning becomes more likely during the first minutes of a downpour, and water can quickly pool in low-lying stretches, rural dips, and underpasses. If hail or severe wind reduces visibility, pull over safely and wait for conditions to improve.

While the Severe Thunderstorm Watch is scheduled to remain active until 11 p.m., officials note that additional advisories or warnings are possible if storms persist or redevelop into early Saturday. The bottom line for southwest Kansas tonight: stay weather-aware, limit unnecessary travel, and have a shelter plan ready in case a warning is issued for your area.
