Lamar, Colo. – Residents across southeastern Colorado are bracing for severe storms Friday evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas, Lincoln, Otero, and Prowers counties under the watch, warning of potentially dangerous weather conditions through late night.
Forecasters say storms developing late this afternoon and evening could produce damaging wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, large hail, and brief but heavy downpours. The combination of strong outflow winds and hail poses risks not only to property and crops but also to travelers and outdoor activities in the region.
Emergency officials have highlighted travel concerns along Highways 50 and 287, where eastward-moving storms could significantly impact drivers. Reduced visibility from heavy rainfall, along with the potential for downed tree limbs and power lines, may lead to hazardous conditions. Rural areas near Springfield and Lamar are especially urged to monitor conditions closely as storms rapidly develop.
Utility crews across the region are on alert in case of isolated power outages caused by downed lines. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, such as patio furniture or equipment, that could be blown around in strong winds.
Authorities stress the importance of moving indoors immediately if warnings are issued. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roadways, which can quickly become dangerous during heavy downpours, and to slow down if caught in reduced visibility.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 11 p.m., though officials caution that additional warnings may be issued if storms intensify into the late evening hours. Southeastern Colorado residents are advised to remain weather-aware, stay connected to local alerts, and take precautions to ensure safety as severe storms sweep across the area.
