DODGE CITY, Kan. – A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect Tuesday evening for eastern Colorado and western Kansas, with dangerous storms expected between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. CDT. Forecasters warn of wind gusts up to 70 mph and hail as large as tennis balls.
The National Weather Service in Dodge City reports that the watch covers 14 counties in western Kansas, including Sherman, Scott, Finney, and Wichita counties, as well as parts of eastern Colorado such as Yuma, Cheyenne, and Prowers. Early storm cells have already developed near the Colorado border, with conditions forecast to intensify through sunset.
Communities at risk include Garden City, Goodland, Colby, Ulysses, Lamar, and Scott City. Travel along Interstate 70 and U.S. 50 could deteriorate quickly, with hazards including blowing debris, low visibility, and frequent lightning. Emergency officials urge residents to stay indoors, secure outdoor belongings, and ensure electronic devices are charged in case of power outages.
Storm activity is likely to weaken late Tuesday night, though forecasters caution that additional storm chances may arise later this week.
