Lamar, Colo. – Communities across southeastern Colorado are preparing for potentially dangerous storms Friday evening as a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in place until 11 p.m. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center has placed Baca, Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Las Animas, Lincoln, Otero, and Prowers counties under the watch, citing the risk of damaging winds, large hail, and heavy rainfall.
Forecasters warn that storms forming late this afternoon could strengthen quickly, producing wind gusts over 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles, crops, and roofs. Along with the threat of hail and high winds, brief but intense downpours could create localized flooding in some areas.
Emergency officials are especially concerned about travel along Highway 50 and Highway 287, where storms tracking eastward through Otero and Prowers counties may cause sudden drops in visibility. Strong outflow winds could also scatter debris onto roadways and lead to isolated power outages as tree limbs and power lines come down. Rural towns and communities near Springfield and Lamar should remain alert as conditions can change rapidly.
Authorities advise residents to take precautions ahead of the storms. This includes securing loose outdoor items, ensuring mobile devices are charged, and moving indoors immediately if warnings are issued. Drivers are reminded to avoid flooded roads and use extreme caution if caught in heavy rainfall, where hydroplaning and reduced visibility pose added risks.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains active through late evening, though additional warnings may be issued if storms continue to strengthen into the night. Residents across southeastern Colorado are urged to stay weather-aware, monitor local alerts, and be prepared to take shelter should severe storms threaten their area.
