Sandusky, Ohio's Tommy Boy Fest celebrates the classic buddy comedy

Columbus, Ohio — A 1995 buddy comedy starring David Spade and Chris Farley will be commemorated this summer in the Ohio town that served as its backdrop.

Tommy Boy Fest will take place in downtown Sandusky this August to commemorate the iconic film’s 30th anniversary.

According to IMDb, the film, which was primarily shot in Canada but includes a few scenes from Ohio, follows Tom “Tommy Boy” Callahan III (Chris Farley) and Richard Hayden (David Spade) on a quest to save the fictional Callahan Auto Parts. Farley and Spade engage in epic shenanigans on their journey to keep the Callahan family business, a brake pad manufacturer, afloat.

The weekend festival, which begins Thursday, August 7, will include a variety of picture-related activities and events. The festivities will begin at Destination Sandusky’s weekly Party at the Pier event on Jackson Street Pier. The Menus, an Ohio cover band, are set to perform at the outdoor venue.

The weekend’s highlight will be the appearance of director Peter Segal, whose notable films include “50 First Dates” and 2005’s “The Longest Yard.” Segal will participate in a Q&A session and display a key prop from the film, the actual car Farley and Spade used in the film. Segal, who owns the vehicle, will be bringing his restored 1967 Plymouth Belvedere II GTX convertible. Fans named Tom or Tommy are invited to take photos with the automobile.

Other “Tommy Boy” events on Friday, August 8, and Saturday, August 9, include a classic car show with movie and TV-themed cars, outdoor movie screenings, a “Tommy Want Wingy Throwdown,” character look-alike contests, and a scavenger hunt around Sandusky for “sights not seen in the movie.”
