A new Kern County Sheriff’s substation being built in Rosamond is projected to greatly enhance response times and law enforcement presence in this rapidly growing desert city.
The existing modest, temporary substation on the west side of Rosamond holds seven deputies, but that number is likely to grow once the larger facility is built.
“But now with our substation being built we’re able to respond faster because we’re in the area, as long as we’re not on another call for service,” Kevin Giorgio, the senior deputy, said.
Prior to having a local presence, response times to calls in Rosamond might be nearly 30 minutes since deputies had to travel from the nearest station in Mojave.
The new substation, which is now under construction near the fire station on Rosamond’s west side, is projected to be completed in the spring of 2027.
Giorgio, who has worked in Rosamond for seven years, informed me that the area is plagued by a variety of crimes, including home burglaries, car thefts, and theft from solar firms. There have also been burglaries at marijuana dispensaries.
“I think it’s going to be a huge opportunity for us to be out in the community more and relative with our response time it’s going to get us on scene faster to where we can anticipate catching more people that are committing the crimes,” according to Giorgio.
When Giorgio started working in Rosamond, the area had 14 deputies, but personnel concerns have lowered that figure in recent years. The new plant promises to remedy the shortfalls.
“Everyone is excited, even myself. We’re looking forward to having a place to call home out here. We haven’t had a substation for a few years due to staffing concerns. That’s improving significantly. The excitement among the public is evident from our actions here. “They are looking forward to having us out here full-time,” Giorgio remarked.
According to Giorgio, heightened law enforcement presence in the neighborhood has made residents feel safer.
