A Los Angeles police officer died and another was injured in a shooting in Baldwin Park.
According to KCAL News, at 7:12 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 31, officers responded to a call of someone “shooting rounds with a rifle” and a person down in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue in Baldwin Park.
“The suspect engaged the officers when they arrived,” Sheriff Robert Luna told the outlet. “One officer was struck and transported to the hospital; unfortunately, he died.” After the shots were fired, other officers responded, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
A second officer was shot and taken to a hospital in stable condition, Luna said. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered another victim, an adult male, dead from apparent gunshot wounds.
The suspect, who police confirmed to be an adult male, was also hit by gunfire and was taken to a nearby hospital in stable condition. He is now in custody, Luna stated during the press conference, according to KCAL News.
The victims’ and suspect’s identities have not been released at this time, as an investigation into the incident continues.
According to Ring camera footage obtained by The Los Angeles Times, eleven shots were fired at 7:16 p.m. on Palm Avenue. In a second video reviewed by the outlet, six more shots were fired 10 minutes later “near the corner of Palm and Filhurst Avenue as helicopters circled overhead.”
“It sounded like fireworks…” Going off constantly back and forth. But then you hear patrol cars from all over coming in and swarming. “It was insane,” one witness told ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department, West Covina, and El Monte police departments all responded to the incident, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“Tonight, one of our officers was murdered. During the press conference, Baldwin Park Police Chief Robert A. López stated that he responded to a call of duty by firing shots to protect our residents in Baldwin Park.
Chief López described his fallen officer as “an amazing man” who enjoyed snowboarding and watching the Dodgers. “It’s extremely tragic to have to deal with this,” he told reporters.
