Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed on Monday that the suspect has a history of mental health issues, but did not provide any additional information.
He has also been accused of violence, including against family members, according to KXAN and KFOX TV, which cited court records.
A Facebook profile that matches Nieneker’s description and uses his name contains posts in which he claims Native Americans are violent and that he feels victimized as a “straight, white dude.”
The motive for the shooting remains unknown as the investigation continues.
