Dayton, Ohio –  St. John the Baptist Church in Maria Stein, which was severely damaged in a massive fire on Thursday, May 29, has provided an update on the recovery efforts.

Over 200 tons of debris were removed from the church, according to Father Ken Schnipke, C.PP.S., of the Christ Our Light Family of Parishes. This occurs alongside the recycling of scrap metal.

According to Fr. Schnipke, crews have been unable to remove debris from the North West sacristy due to unsafe door headers and walls. He also stated that the bell tower platform and the area above it are severely damaged.

When writing about the organ, he stated that the console, façade, and mechanical parts had been destroyed. However, the basswood case protected a significant portion of the pipes. The pipes will be relocated to a safer location until possible restoration begins. The windows and door frames will also be moved and restored. The large choir loft crucifix will be removed.

According to a recent structural assessment, the walls are generally strong. However, a portion of the upper side walls, the North West wall, and the upper section of the bell tower would have to be disassembled and rebuilt. The basement and foundation walls would most likely need to be reinforced.

Experts in restoration and structural assessment have been evaluating the site and expect to have preliminary estimates and options by the end of August. The St. John Building Committee is currently looking into potential architects and future plans for St. John. These will be presented to parishioners, who will help determine the best course of action.
