A shooting in North Carolina resulted in one death and several serious injuries.
On Sunday, June 1, around 12:45 a.m. local time, the Hickory Police Department responded to a report of “multiple persons shot” at a residence on Walnut Acres Drive in Mountain View, according to a news release shared on Facebook by the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).
The incident injured at least 12 people, one of whom died and another in critical condition. Several other victims are still hospitalized, according to police.
“Sheriff’s investigators, along with investigators from Hickory Police Department and Special Agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, are at the scene of this incident attempting to establish a motive and identify those responsible,” according to the CCSO.
There have been no arrests made at this time.
The shooting occurred at “a party at a residence,” according to Aaron Turk, a major with the sheriff’s office, who spoke at a press conference.
He added that when deputies arrived, they discovered “multiple people had been shot and began rendering aid.”
There were approximately 100 people at the house when “one or more people started shooting,” according to ABC 11, citing investigators.
Turk stated at the press conference that authorities are currently “trying to establish motive” as they continue to look for potential suspects.
He confirmed that more than one person was involved in the shooting, but police “don’t have an exact count” at this time, according to WCNC.
The identities of the victims and suspects have not yet been revealed.
According to Turk, the incident spread from inside the house to the street, the residence’s backyard, and the neighbor’s yard.
“This does seem to be something that had some focus associated with that party,” according to him.
The investigation is ongoing.
Authorities have asked anyone with information about the incident to call the CCSO at 828-464-3112.
