SYLVANIA, Ohio — As the summer season comes to an end, the Ohio Department of Transportation continues to work on a number of projects in Northwest Ohio.

According to Kelsie Hoagland, public information officer for ODOT District 2, there is still a “productive season left” for construction.

ODOT crews recently completed their largest project of the year, adding an extra lane for drivers on I-475 between Holland and Maumee. While that project is completed, crews are now focusing on other critical areas.

One ongoing project is the reconstruction of the U.S. 23 and Monroe Street interchange, a collaboration with the city of Sylvania. The project is expected to be completed next fall.

Before construction began on the interchange, ODOT environmental specialists were on-site to ensure the safety of the surrounding environment. This included identifying and relocating any mussels found in nearby creeks. According to the ODOT, this is common practice for many water-related projects.

Another major project is a new roundabout in Ottawa County at the intersection of state Route 269 and Danbury Road, which has been a “very strange configuration for many years,” according to Hoagland.

The project was intentionally started after Labor Day to avoid the peak of the Marblehead Peninsula tourist season.
