Northern California is preparing for an intense and potentially dangerous stretch of heat this weekend, as temperatures are set to soar into the triple digits from Friday through Saturday. A heat advisory has been issued for the Sacramento Valley, the Shasta Lake area, and surrounding foothills, with highs expected to peak between 95°F and 106°F. The National Weather Service has warned of widespread risks for heat-related illnesses, urging residents to take precautions.
The heat advisory will be in effect from 11 a.m. Friday until 11 p.m. Saturday, with the most extreme temperatures hitting the region during the afternoon hours. Overnight lows will offer little respite, remaining in the mid-60s to low 70s. This lack of cooling at night raises the risk for heat exhaustion and heat stroke, particularly for those without access to air conditioning or other cooling methods.
The advisory impacts several major cities, including Sacramento, Chico, Stockton, Oroville, Fairfield, Red Bluff, and Modesto. The National Weather Service recommends that residents stay indoors during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of fluids, and check on elderly neighbors or those who may be more vulnerable to heat. Outdoor workers and athletes are especially at risk and should limit strenuous activity to early mornings or evenings when the temperatures are somewhat more tolerable.
In response to the extreme conditions, Cal/OSHA has reminded employers that shade and water breaks are mandatory during extreme heat events. Cooling centers will be available in multiple counties throughout the weekend to provide relief for those in need.
While temperatures are expected to ease slightly by Sunday, above-average warmth will continue into next week. If the high-pressure system persists, further advisories could be issued to address the ongoing risk of dangerous heat.
The five-day forecast for Sacramento is as follows:
