Milwaukee County has been placed under a state of emergency after more than 10 inches of rain fell on the region Saturday, resulting in widespread flooding and overwhelming sewer systems. County Executive David Crowley made the announcement as the heavy rain continues to impact travel and property, with additional rainfall expected through the night.
According to the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management, crews have activated an Emergency Operations Center to coordinate efforts in response to the crisis. Floodwaters have shut down several city streets, and the Department of Public Works has been inundated with calls regarding sewer backups, damaged traffic signals, and blocked storm inlets.
Officials are urging residents to stay out of floodwater, as it poses contamination risks and may conceal hazardous debris. Drivers are advised to avoid flooded roads to prevent accidents or further damage to vehicles. In addition, homeowners are asked to reduce water usage to ease the strain on the already overloaded sewer system. For those dealing with flooded basements, fallen trees, or damaged signs, requests for city services can be made through the Milwaukee Click4Action portal.
The community is also urged to check on neighbors, particularly older adults or those who may need assistance, and to call 911 for emergencies. The state of emergency is expected to remain in effect throughout the night, with the possibility of additional advisories should the rainfall persist.
