LIMA, Ohio — Mayor Sharetta Smith spoke to the Kiwanis Club of Lima on Tuesday, updating members on major city initiatives such as the nearly $12 million Lima Community Aquatic Center.
The project, which is currently in its final stages, will offer both indoor and outdoor swimming options year-round. The facility, which is located near Lima Stadium Park, is intended to address the area’s lack of public swimming opportunities.
“The Greater Lima area once had 11 pools,” Mayor Smith stated. “Today, there are just four — all of which require a membership.”
“Today I’m going to be talking about the opening of the Lima Community Aquatic Park,” she told the participants. “On June 27, we will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony for that facility. As part of our update to various community partners and stakeholders, I’m here to speak with the Kiwanis Club about where we stand. We’re finishing up construction on that project.”
Mayor Smith emphasized the center’s potential benefits for public health, recreation, and safety. Lima City Schools intends to incorporate swim education into their curriculum to ensure that all students learn water safety skills. The facility is expected to open to the public at the end of July.
