Fort Wayne, Ind. – Local and state law enforcement agencies are ramping up impaired driving enforcement ahead of Labor Day.
The Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD), Allen County Sheriff’s Department, and Indiana State Police (ISP) are collaborating with the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute to combat impaired driving and save lives.
From August 16 to August 30, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration will conduct increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints as part of its ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ national enforcement campaign.
“Our top priority is keeping our roads and community safe,” said FWPD Lieutenant Tony Maze.
“The ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign is an awareness effort to spread the message that drunk driving is illegal and deadly,” said Allen County Sheriff Troy Hershberger.
“Together, law enforcement and drivers can protect our community and put an end to this dangerous behavior,” said ISP Sergeant Steven Glass.
According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, alcohol was involved in nearly 14% of all traffic fatalities in Indiana in 2024, with drug impairment accounting for more than 35%.
“If you are impaired, whether by alcohol, drugs, or medication, you should not drive,” said Douglas Huntsinger, Executive Director of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute. “As we head into the final stretch of summer, we’re urging Hoosiers to make the responsible choice.”
Law enforcement officials say they encourage drivers to make transportation plans before drinking alcohol. Safe options include designating a sober driver, using a ridesharing app, or hailing a taxi.
