LIMA, Ohio – Mark your calendars, Limaland: a brand-new parade is coming to town in celebration of Juneteenth.
The Lima Juneteenth Committee has announced its inaugural parade, which will begin the community’s annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday, June 14th. The parade will start at 10:30 a.m. and travel north on South Main Street, beginning at Vine Street and ending at the roundabout in Town Square.
The parade will lead directly into the downtown Juneteenth celebration, which will last from noon to 6 p.m. in the square. Organizers say the goal is to attract more people to the festival and provide an opportunity to commemorate the abolition of slavery in the United States while also promoting education and appreciation for Black heritage.
“People need to learn and understand what it means to celebrate this,” said Marc Wright, Chair of the Juneteenth Committee. “It is unity. It’s education, you know, and it’s all about finding out what happened. How can we grow? How can we all exist in this world together? And, at the end of the day, we should just love each other.”
So far, 40 units have registered to participate in the parade. Those interested in joining still have until the end of the week to register by calling 419-516-4056. More details about the parade and festivities can be found on the Lima Juneteenth Committee’s Facebook page.
