Intense Heat Grips Wilmington and Surrounding Areas Before Weekend Cooldown

Published On:

Residents of southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina, including Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, and Conway, are facing sweltering heat today, with heat index values exceeding 100°F. This extreme heat is expected to be the last of the week before a significant cooldown hits over the weekend.

Dangerous Heat Conditions on Friday

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Friday afternoon will bring the highest heat index values of the week, with readings peaking between 100°F and 104°F from Conway to Surf City. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will create dangerous “feels-like” conditions, particularly from noon to 6 p.m., both inland and along the coast. Cities like Bolivia, Kingstree, and Lumberton are expected to see heat index values near or above 100°F.

Due to the extreme heat, outdoor activities are discouraged, especially during the afternoon hours. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and avoid leaving children or pets in parked cars. Local schools and businesses may adjust their schedules, and cooling centers may be opened to provide relief.

Relief Arrives This Weekend

A welcome change is expected by Saturday when high temperatures are forecast to drop into the mid-80s, with lower humidity and overnight lows in the upper 60s. This cooler, drier weather pattern will provide relief from the heat and is expected to last into early next week.

While additional heat advisories may be issued if necessary, Friday’s intense heat is likely the last major event for the time being, offering a break after several weeks of high temperatures.
