A New York man was charged with conspiracy and criminal solicitation after authorities claimed he attempted to murder a business associate as part of a “deranged plan.”
During a press conference broadcast on Monday by local cable news outlet News 12 Long Island, Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly provided additional information about the arrest of 48-year-old Navdeep Singh, who allegedly plotted to have an unnamed colleague killed by a hit man. Singh allegedly offered the hit man $100,000 and 10 acres of land in India to complete the job, which the suspect reportedly had some very violent requirements for.
Donnelly told the media that Singh not only wanted his intended victim kidnapped and killed, but also “dismembered,” and requested to see “a picture of the man’s head and another of his body” after the deed was completed.
According to Donnelly, Singh and his alleged target had a long-term relationship through their work in the construction industry. However, “roughly two years ago,” the two had “a dispute on a job site” that “soured their relationship.”
According to Donnelly, Singh and the other man have been “locked in a yearslong, multimillion dollar civil litigation suit,” but last month, Singh believed that his colleague “had to go permanently.”
The alleged plot started on May 29, when Singh began to “put a deranged plan into action.” According to Donnelly, his alleged initial offer of $100,000 and 10 acres of land included an apparent $7,000 down payment. The alleged hit man met with Singh and an unnamed co-conspirator several times to finalize the plan. Singh allegedly told the hitman to “brutally torture, extort, and eventually kill his former colleague.”
Donnelly claimed during Monday’s press conference, which was also covered by a local Patch outlet, that Singh “wanted [the victim] dismembered.” He informed the hit man that he wanted a photograph of the man’s head and another of his body. Singh wanted this man to be humiliated and afraid in his final moments.
According to authorities, Singh allegedly purchased several burner phones for the hit man in order to “avoid law enforcement detection” prior to the hit. He also allegedly took photos of the alleged victim’s home and forwarded them to the hitman. Singh was driving the hit man through the alleged target’s neighborhood the day he was apprehended.
Donnelly stated that the would-be hitman eventually came forward to alert police to the alleged plot.
According to Donnelly, the conflict between the two started when the alleged victim took Singh’s company “off a job he was managing.” In her press release, she said, “We can say we saved a life this past weekend.”
Singh remains in custody on a $1 million cash bond and a $2 million surety bond, and he has been ordered to surrender his passport. His next court appearance is set for Tuesday.
