A Kentucky mother died after being shot by an unknown suspect while walking her 7-year-old daughter to the bus stop.
The family of Redaja Williams, 23, spoke to the media after the mother of two young children was shot and killed in front of her 7-year-old daughter on Wednesday. To keep her memory alive, they used their platform to ask for assistance in locating the person responsible for her violent death.
In a press conference hours after the shooting, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg stated that he is “heartbroken for the victim’s family today.” I am heartbroken for the little girl who was holding the victim’s hand. I’m heartbroken for all of the children who were at the bus stop. I’m heartbroken for all of the other families in our city who have been affected by this shock and are now scared.
Louisville Metropolitan Police Chief Paul Humphrey stated that officers responded to reports of shots fired around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. A woman, later identified as Williams, was “struck and killed.” Earlier reports said she was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to police, several people, including children, were present at other bus stops during the shooting. Kendra LaRue, who was friends with Williams and was present when she was shot, told local CBS affiliate WLKY, “Every time I close my eyes, I see her and hear her breath.” I can hear her gasping for air.
During the press conference, Humphrey stated that witnesses to the incident identified a potential suspect. That person was interviewed by police and later cleared in the Williams shooting. The alleged gunman remains at large. Police later released two images of a possible suspect, a young Black man wearing a bright red hoodie sweatshirt and black sweatpants, who was seen near the scene of Williams’ murder on Wednesday.
Louisville Metropolitan Police have asked the public for information that could lead to a suspect in Williams’ death. If anyone has any information, they have established an anonymous tip line at 502-574-LMPD and an online anonymous crime tip hotline.
