A Louisiana woman has been charged with her ex-boyfriend’s shooting death, as well as two men she allegedly recruited to kill him.
On June 5, a superseding indictment was filed in the January shooting death of 32-year-old Jonathan Brookin. Brookin, a father of five children, was fatally shot by three men during a fight with his ex-girlfriend, Subrina Honore, 32. The former couple was reportedly fighting over the paternity of her baby, which she claimed was Brookin’s. According to court records obtained by local news outlet Nola.com, Honore allegedly threatened Brookin on social media, including a post from the day he died that read, “I got time today, [expletive].” I’m coming to your house.”
According to court records, Brookin was at the home of a female friend on January 27 with her two children, ages 5 and 6. Around 6 p.m. that day, the friend told police that Honore arrived at the house, reportedly upset about a birth certificate for the baby she thought she had with Brookin.
The woman told investigators that Brookin was in the home’s garage with the door open while she was elsewhere in the house. She overheard Brookin argue with another woman, later identified as Honore. During a court hearing in February, Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office Homicide Detective Ryan Vaught stated that Brookin may not have had the birth certificate in the first place.
Vaught also told the court that the woman and Brookin repeatedly asked Honore to leave, but Honore allegedly refused. At that point, according to Vaught, the woman reported seeing two men, including Arthur Thomas, 31, get out of a nearby car, both carrying guns. The woman rushed inside the house to hide with her children.
The woman reportedly told police that after the gunfire stopped, she noticed Brookin bleeding on the ground. He was later pronounced dead on the scene.
According to Vaught, further investigation into the shooting revealed that shots were allegedly fired by three different people. Authorities believe Brookin fired his rifle in self-defense before being fatally shot in the head.
Honore reportedly told investigators that Brookin shot first. After the shooting began, Honore reportedly fled the scene with Thomas and the second alleged gunman.
Vaught testified that Honore allegedly asked Thomas to assist her in getting Brookin to hand over the birth certificate. Honore also reportedly admitted to contacting the second alleged gunman.
Brookin’s sister told Nola.com at the time of the alleged shooting that Honore “had been threatening him all week long.”
Honore and Thomas were arrested the day after Brookin died and charged with second-degree murder and obstruction of justice. Jatary Joseph, 32, and Jjaun Jasmin, 34, were also arrested and charged with the same crimes, but police did not say how they were involved in Brookin’s death.
