Celina, Ohio — After nearly a decade away, the Governor’s Cup Regatta returned to Grand Lake this weekend — but high winds forced organizers to postpone Saturday’s start.
The highly anticipated event was supposed to begin Saturday, but strong winds kept race boats docked. Nonetheless, visitors made the most of the dry start by exploring the venue, sampling food from local vendors, and getting a close look at the race boats.
“This weekend, we have boats from the West Coast, actually, that came in to participate in this race,” said Craig Obringer, founder of Veterans Forever. “We’ll start with them being craned into the water, then going out there and doing their heat laps. We have five different classes, and once they’re finished, they’re craned out, and the new set is brought in.”
Obringer reported that community support has been strong, with local sponsors raising $78,000 to bring the regatta back. Weather permitting, races will now begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday, with heats continuing throughout the day.
