A woman from the United Kingdom has been sentenced in connection with her husband’s murder in 2022, which she initially claimed was suicide.
Kyle Pugh, 29, was killed in a “violent incident” in their Newport home on March 22, 2022, by his wife, 34-year-old Amy Pugh, according to a statement from the Crown Prosecution Service.
Amy, who was convicted of Kyle’s murder in June of this year, was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 13 years and 77 days on Thursday, September 4, according to a CPS statement.
Amy “compressed” Kyle’s neck after an altercation in March 2022, according to the court record. Amy slapped Kyle, who then struck her back. Amy then grabbed Kyle, pulled him down, and attacked him further by compressing his neck, resulting in “fatal injuries,” according to the CPS.
She waited 20 minutes before calling 911 and was seen performing CPR on her husband when emergency personnel arrived. She then informed them that Kyle had hanged himself with a belt.
During the emergency call, the court heard her say, “Kyle, wake up, why have you done this?” according to the BBC.
When police and paramedics arrived on the scene, Amy appeared distressed and inquired, “Has he got a pulse or what? Because there’s a chance he’ll make it through this stupidity,” the court heard, according to ITV.
Kyle died in the hospital the next day.
Amy was arrested in April of that year and charged months later, in November.
The judge stated on Friday that Amy “decided to concoct a lie and stage a scene,” according to the BBC.
According to Emily Clewer of CPS, Amy’s “actions that night robbed Kyle Pugh of the rest of his life and deprived his family of their loved one.”
“There is no sentence that can return Mr Pugh to his family, but we hope they are comforted that his killer has been brought to justice,” Clewer informed the audience.
