Southern Colorado will experience intensifying heat this week, with plains communities facing near triple-digit temperatures by Thursday, while higher elevations will deal with daily thunderstorms. The most significant warming will occur east of the mountains, where conditions remain dry.
According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, temperatures on Tuesday will range from 82 to 88 degrees across the plains under sunny skies. By Wednesday, highs will climb to 89–97 degrees, and by Thursday, temperatures will reach 92–100 degrees. In mountain valleys, temperatures will be in the upper 70s to upper 80s, with a slight chance of afternoon storms. The central and southwest mountains will have a 30–40% chance of storms each day.
Travelers heading into the mountains should be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions, as afternoon storms may bring lightning, brief downpours, and gusty winds. Outdoor workers in the plains should stay hydrated and limit strenuous activities during the peak heat.
While the warm, mostly dry conditions will persist for lower elevations through the weekend, afternoon storm chances will continue in the mountains. Updates on expanding storm threats will be issued as conditions evolve.
