Heat Advisory in Effect for Southeastern North Carolina and Northeastern South Carolina

Wilmington, NC – A blistering heat wave is sweeping across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina today, with the National Weather Service issuing a heat advisory for the region. Heat index values are expected to climb as high as 109°F by midday, creating dangerous conditions from Wilmington to Myrtle Beach.

The heat advisory is in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM EDT on Monday, July 21, 2025. Cities such as Wilmington, Myrtle Beach, Lumberton, and Florence will experience the highest heat index values, putting residents at significant risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with chronic conditions.

The National Weather Service advises residents to take immediate precautions in response to the extreme heat. Staying hydrated is critical, so drinking plenty of fluids is essential. People are also urged to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and to stay indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. For individuals who need to work outdoors, frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments are strongly recommended to prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Additionally, pet owners should ensure their animals have access to fresh water and shaded areas throughout the day to keep them safe from the heat. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—if symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or confusion occur, it’s important to move the person to a cooler environment and seek medical help immediately by calling 911.

The advisory is set to expire at 8 PM tonight, but residents should stay informed for further updates. If the heat persists, additional warnings may be issued, and it’s important to continue taking precautions as conditions evolve throughout the day.

As this heat wave continues to impact the region, residents are encouraged to prioritize safety and remain vigilant against the potentially dangerous effects of the extreme heat.
