Steven Cook went missing on the Greek island of Crete during his first trip abroad without his parents in 2005.
Twenty years later, police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of the 20-year-old University of Liverpool student from Sandbach, the BBC reports.
Cook’s brother, Chris Cook, 50, told the BBC that his family learned of Steven’s arrest shortly after September 1, the 20th anniversary of his death.
He and his family are unsure what to expect now that someone has been arrested.
“There might be a legal sense of justice, as in somebody is found innocent or guilty,” Chris told the broadcaster. “But I don’t think anything can pay back and compensate for everything that’s happened to us as a family and what we’ve been through over the past 20 years.”
According to the Liverpool Echo, Steven and his friends visited the lively resort town of Malia on Crete in 2005.
According to the BBC, he and his friends went bar hopping on the first night of their vacation.
Police said he was last seen leaving a bar alone and asking for directions back to his hotel, according to The Guardian.
Workers discovered his skeletal remains in 2017 while cleaning the bottom of a well in Malia, according to The Guardian.
They also discovered a disposable camera and a belt inside the well. It’s unclear whether those items are linked to Steven’s death.
Cheshire Police confirmed to the BBC that they were aware of “developments” in Steven’s case, including the filing of a murder charge.
According to the BBC, a judge in Greece has referred the case to the Heraklion Jury Trial Court, where a hearing is scheduled for October 21.
The Cheshire Constabulary and Crete police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
