Golfers remember Lima Woman's legacy with the Memorial Scramble

Harrod, Ohio — Golfers gathered to honor the memory of a Lima woman who was killed nearly 30 years earlier.

Bonita Haynes was tragically killed by inmates at the Lima Correctional Institute in 1996, while working as a case worker. To honor her memory, the Lima Affiliate of the National Association of Blacks in Criminal Justice, along with other local nonprofits, organizes a Memorial Golf Scramble in her honor. Around 60 golfers hit the links at Colonial Golfers Club to raise money for a scholarship fund named in Haynes’ honor, which will assist students in furthering their education.

“So, this golf outing has served several purposes, not only for scholarships, but also in her memory. And we are so saddened by the tragedy that occurred that we can name this after her, but we are also keeping her memory alive, not just for us as an organization, but also for us as Lima community members,” said Dr. Lisa Bradley-Glenn, Bonita L. Haynes Memorial Golf Scramble.

The golfers expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to participate in such an important event.

“For community members to be able to remember the horrific situation that occurred many, many years ago while still coming together and galvanizing in a way that allows us to play golf, have fun, and raise funds. It’s simply important to be able to support this initiative,” stated Dr. Willie Heggins, executive director of Heir Force Community School.

Over the years, the golf scramble has raised over $13,000 for approximately 25 scholarships.
