A Michigan man who was a guest at a pool party and allegedly stabbed four people, two of whom died, has been charged with murder.

The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office announced in a press release that Daiwan Lemane Hopson, 31, had been arrested and charged in connection with a violent stabbing incident on August 9 that killed two people. According to Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy, an altercation between Hopson and an unidentified 40-year-old man erupted in the backyard of Jakirea Williams’ 31-year-old home. As the argument escalated, Hopson allegedly “produced a knife” and stabbed the 40-year-old man several times.

Williams reportedly attempted to break up the alleged fight once it had moved to the front yard of the house. Hopson allegedly stabbed Williams, 25-year-old Martisha Payne, and a 31-year-old man. All four stabbing victims were transported to a hospital for treatment, but only two survived.

Worthy claimed that Hopson fled the scene following his alleged stabbing attack. He was finally arrested on August 15. The Michigan Department of Corrections arrested Hopson because he was on parole for assault with the intent to cause great bodily harm, according to local Fox affiliate WJBK.

Prosecutors said Hopson will be tried in Detroit on two counts of first-degree murder and two counts of assault with intent to kill.

Worthy stated in the press release, “What began as a friendly family and friends end-of-summer gathering turned deadly with four people stabbed.” Two died from their injuries. A disagreement. A quick escalation. An introduction of a lethal weapon. Then there were multiple deaths. It’s so senseless. So tragic. “And so very violent.”

Hopson’s arraignment has yet to be scheduled.
