Fort Wayne, Indiana – A Flag Day ceremony in Fort Wayne kicked off Allen County’s celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence.
Flag Day is a holiday observed in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the national flag on June 14, 1777, by a resolution of the Second Continental Congress.
On Saturday, residents gathered at the Fort Wayne History Center for the Flag Day ceremony.
The event included a color presentation, a musical performance, speakers, and information about the US flag.
According to community leaders, the next celebration of the United States’ 250th anniversary of independence in Allen County will take place during Constitution Week and Bells Across America.
Constitution Week is an annual observance in the United States that runs from September 17 to 23, commemorating the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17, 1787.
Bells Across America is a tradition during Constitution Week that involves ringing bells to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution on September 17th.
According to community leaders, citywide bells will ring at 4 p.m. on September 17th. The Aldersgate Church Bell Choir will also perform at the Allen County Public Library Theater.
“By emphasizing history’s relevance, telling an inclusive story, and emphasizing the importance of education, we ensure that the lessons of the past continue to inspire and guide us,” said ‘America 250’ Allen County Committee Chairwoman Benita Sheets Steyer.
On July 4, 2026, the United States will formally celebrate 250 years of independence, marking the signing of the Declaration of Independence on that date in 1776.
