The streets of Elyria are a little safer as the summer season begins, thanks to a recent initiative by the local police department.
Moving beyond traditional patrols, the Elyria Police Department has invested time in the city’s youth, teaching them the fundamentals of safe driving.
With school out and the freeways congested, young drivers are statistically at a higher risk. Recognizing this, the Elyria Police Department held a Teen Driver Safety Class, where local teenagers learned everything from the dangers of distracted driving to proper vehicle maintenance.
The department noted that these participants, eager to enjoy their first taste of summer freedom, took time out of their weekend to confront the harsh realities of the road.
On their social media accounts, they wrote: “These amazing young drivers gave up part of their Saturday to learn the essentials of being safe and responsible behind the wheel.”
The class wasn’t just about cautionary tales and legal lectures. Local businesses provided unexpected perks to show their community and support.
Auto Details and Pink Peppercorn Catering, both local favorites, gave attendees a free car wash and a hearty lunch as an incentive.
