Central Alabama is experiencing a dangerous heat wave today, with heat indices reaching as high as 106°F in areas such as Tuscaloosa, Fayette, and Hamilton. According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, a Heat Advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. Thursday for northwestern and western parts of Central Alabama. Daytime highs are expected to hit 95°F, but with high humidity, the “feels like” temperature will push well into the triple digits, creating a moderate to major heat risk for residents.
Cities like Tuscaloosa, Jasper, and Hamilton are among those under alert. This heat wave poses particular risks to outdoor workers, children, the elderly, and other vulnerable populations. The National Weather Service is urging residents to take precautions by staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day, wearing light-colored clothing, and never leaving children or pets in vehicles, even for short periods.
Air conditioning is recommended, but the NWS also notes that it may not be enough in poorly ventilated spaces. For those without reliable cooling, visiting public buildings such as libraries or community centers can offer relief. Although there have been no reports of power outages or road issues so far, conditions could worsen if the heat persists into the weekend.
