Dangerous Heat Returns to Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles with Heat Advisory in Effect

Dangerous heat is making a return to the Texas and Oklahoma Panhandles, with temperatures expected to soar as high as 105 degrees Thursday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service in Amarillo has issued a Heat Advisory for the region, with conditions posing an increased risk for heat-related illnesses.

The advisory will be in effect from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, impacting several areas, including Amarillo, Guymon, Dumas, Canyon, and Palo Duro Canyon State Park, where high temperatures could reach up to 106 degrees. The added humidity will exacerbate the oppressive heat, particularly for those spending extended periods outdoors or without reliable cooling systems.

Residents in Amarillo, Pampa, Borger, Clarendon, and Perryton are strongly encouraged to limit outdoor activity, particularly during the hottest parts of the day, and to stay well-hydrated throughout the day. Checking on neighbors and relatives is also vital, especially for those who may be more vulnerable to heat-related health risks.

Local emergency agencies have cautioned everyone to wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and avoid strenuous tasks during the peak heat. Special attention should be given to individuals who work outdoors or engage in physical activity during these sweltering conditions.

Parks and popular tourist destinations, such as Palo Duro Canyon State Park, may experience particularly dangerous conditions, especially along exposed trails and ridges where heat can be more intense. The National Weather Service advises visitors to these locations to exercise extra caution, limit physical exertion, and seek shaded areas when possible.

While the Heat Advisory is expected to last through Thursday evening, slightly cooler temperatures are forecasted for Friday. However, additional heat advisories may be issued if the hot conditions persist. In the meantime, residents are urged to take necessary precautions to prevent heat-related health issues and stay informed about updated weather alerts.
