Dangerous Heat Returns to Southwest Missouri with Triple-Digit Heat Indexes

Dangerous heat is making its return to the Ozarks as Springfield and much of southwest Missouri face high temperatures nearing 100 degrees and unrelenting sun through the weekend. The National Weather Service in Springfield has issued warnings for the region, as heat index values are expected to reach into the triple digits each day, significantly raising the risk of heat exhaustion. This is especially concerning for outdoor workers, athletes, and anyone without air conditioning.

High temperatures from Thursday through Sunday will range between 90 and 98 degrees, with the hottest afternoons anticipated on Friday and Saturday. Forecasters have warned that the humidity will amplify the heat, making it feel even hotter, with heat index values likely peaking near 100 degrees in the late afternoon. With minimal rain expected—just a 10 to 20 percent chance each day—there will be little relief from the extreme conditions.

Residents in Springfield, Branson, Joplin, and surrounding areas are urged to take extra precautions if spending time outdoors. It’s advised to limit strenuous activity to the cooler early mornings or evenings, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable populations such as the elderly, neighbors, and pets. Utilities in the region are expecting high demand on the power grid, as air conditioners will likely run nonstop to combat the heat. Local schools, outdoor events, and youth sports should also prepare for potential heat-related delays or schedule changes.

This prolonged hot spell is expected to continue through Sunday, with little chance for significant cooling. The National Weather Service warns that additional advisories may be issued if the heat intensifies or if there is a shift in rain patterns.
