Boaters on Lake Superior are being warned of hazardous conditions early Tuesday as dense fog continues to blanket much of Michigan’s northern shoreline. Visibility has dropped to less than one nautical mile in several areas, making navigation risky. The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued Dense Fog Advisories that remain in effect until 8 a.m. EDT for waters stretching from Ontonagon to Whitefish Point, including Isle Royale National Park.
Dense Fog Advisory and Small Craft Advisory
The Dense Fog Advisory is in place until 8 a.m. EDT, with visibility in affected areas limited to under a nautical mile. For offshore zones from the Portage Canal to Grand Marais, the advisory has been extended until 11 a.m. EDT. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution, as the fog makes navigation challenging.
In addition to the fog, a Small Craft Advisory will take effect at 1 p.m. Tuesday for waters from Eagle River to Manitou Island. Gusts could reach up to 25 knots, and waves are expected to build up to 4 feet, creating further dangers, especially for smaller vessels.
Safety Tips for Boaters
Boaters are urged to take all necessary precautions when navigating through these conditions. Use radar, fog signals, and ensure that all navigation lights are active. Mariners are strongly encouraged to avoid non-essential travel until the fog lifts and conditions improve. The combination of fog and wind could be especially dangerous for less-experienced boaters.
Cause of the Conditions
These dangerous conditions are typical for early summer when warmer air meets the cold waters of Lake Superior, leading to the formation of dense fog. This is common in the region during the change of seasons, and mariners should expect similar conditions throughout the week if these weather patterns continue.
What to Expect Later in the Week
Boaters should remain alert for additional advisories as weather patterns are expected to persist, potentially leading to more fog and hazardous conditions. The National Weather Service will continue to monitor the situation and issue updates as necessary.
