A “normal” teenage sleepover turned violent for a 16-year-old girl in Missouri earlier this month, with cops claiming she was “shot in the throat” and killed by a 21-year-old woman while “fixing her friend’s hair” at a vanity, according to prosecutors.
Bailey Lewis, of Lenexa, is charged with second-degree felony murder in the death of Traelynn Sibley, a Grandview High School student who was about to begin her junior year when Lewis gunned her down on August 9 at a home in the 3600 block of Norton Avenue, according to the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.
Lewis allegedly carried out the fatal shooting while driving past the residence. Cops say she was looking for someone else inside the house who had a “falling out” with her after Lewis allegedly allowed the person to be “jumped” at a gas station months earlier, among other things.
According to Kansas City Police detective David Adair’s probable cause affidavit, the spacing of the casings suggests that the shooter(s) were moving southbound at the time. “The home and a red Mazda in the driveway were hit several times by gunfire. The home had bullet damage/fragments both inside and out, as well as a large amount of visible blood leading from the living room to the bathroom.”
According to prosecutors, Traelynn was visiting a friend and spending the night at their house when Lewis pulled up and began blasting while the girls were doing their hair. According to the affidavit, detectives interviewed multiple people who were inside the home, and their stories were all very similar.
“They described a normal night with two of the females fixing each other’s hair at a vanity near the front door of the structure, one female was in back bedroom while two adult males were playing video games in the living room,” according to the statement of charges.
“A toddler was also present in the home,” the document states. “They heard gunshots and saw projectiles enter the house through the front door and the living room wall/window near the front door. The juvenile female was shot in the throat while fixing her friend’s hair at the vanity. She ran to the bathroom and collapsed.”
Witnesses told cops that Lewis, who was identified by surveillance video showing her 2025 Hyundai Elantra allegedly coming and going from the scene, knew where her former acquaintance lived and was angry with her for stealing something with a male friend of theirs — a claim the person denied, according to the affidavit.
Prosecutors say they had “not associated for a couple months” after Lewis accused the person of theft. According to the affidavit, their relationship soured from there and they stopped speaking altogether.
According to the complaint, one witness stated that the person inside the home who knew Lewis had a “falling out with Bailey over Bailey allowing her to be ‘jumped’ at a gas station months before the homicide.” It is unclear whether any arrests or charges resulted from the incident.
Detectives allegedly discovered social media posts connecting Lewis to the person inside the house who knew her, and the former friend also recognized her. Lewis was also linked to another shooting that allegedly occurred 15 minutes earlier at an apartment building, with his Elantra also seen on video near that scene, according to the affidavit.
“It should be noted the drive time via Google Maps is between 11-18 minutes from location to location depending on the route you take,” according to the statement of consent. “This drive time aligned with the approximate time frame between the incidents if a car fired shots into [the apartment complex] and then drove straight to [the former friend’s home].”
In addition to murder, Lewis is charged with multiple counts of accessory to armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, prosecutors announced on Friday. She was held over the weekend on a $400,000 bond and remained at the Jackson County Detention Center as of Sunday, according to records.
