Springfield, Ill. – A dangerous stretch of heat is setting up across central Illinois this weekend, with temperatures soaring into the 90s and humidity pushing heat index values into the triple digits. The hottest day is expected Sunday, when it could feel as high as 104 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, heat index readings will range from 95 to 100 degrees on Saturday, climbing even higher Sunday. Dew points in the 60s will keep conditions sticky and uncomfortable through at least Tuesday, with little chance of rainfall to provide relief.
Safety Concerns
Residents in Peoria, Springfield, and Champaign are urged to take precautions against the heat. Outdoor workers and those without air conditioning face the highest risk of heat-related illness. Officials recommend:
- Limiting strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours
- Drinking plenty of water
- Checking on elderly neighbors and vulnerable individuals
Extended Outlook
Highs will remain in the mid-90s through Tuesday, with no significant cooldown expected. The Weather Service cautions that additional advisories may be issued if heat indices climb further.
