Sandusky, Ohio – Following a couple of terrifying incidents in recent weeks, there has been a lot of online discussion about Cedar Point’s safety.
The Power Tower, which takes you up and down, is temporarily closed after a cable on one of the ride’s towers detached from the ride cart during operation on Sunday.
A Cedar Point spokesperson stated that the ride’s safety system functioned normally and brought the cart to the loading position. Nobody was injured, but the Ohio Department of Agriculture is investigating.
Power Tower propels riders 240 feet into the air at speeds of up to 60 mph.
Officials said the ride, which opened in 1998, will remain closed while the park conducts a thorough review and inspection.
This isn’t the only Cedar Point ride that’s had some issues recently. The park’s newest attraction, the record-breaking tilt coaster Siren’s Curse, has had to close five times this summer due to mechanical issues.
In July, a video went viral after the ride was halted and riders were forced to walk down the 160-foot-high tracks.
While roller coasters are expected to break down from time to time, these incidents have sparked debate on social media about whether Cedar Point’s rides are still safe to ride. Some believe the popular amusement park has been in decline since its owner, Cedar Fair, merged with the larger Six Flags in 2024.
According to a Cedar Point spokesman, safety remains the top priority.
Meanwhile, Cedar Point’s annual HalloWeekends event is just around the corner, and the park says it is now hiring for all fall positions, with the majority starting at $20 per hour. Potential applicants can attend Cedar Point’s Fall Hiring Event, which is scheduled for August 18-20 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Click here for more information or to apply.
