Starting next week, Canton will see several changes impacting public transportation and infrastructure:
- Stark Area Regional Transit Authority (SARTA) is discontinuing five bus routes effective February due to budget shortfalls, which will affect nighttime and community circulator services in Canton. Routes impacted include late night loops and the Success Express, reducing transit options during these hours.
- Temporary detours will be in effect on the Harmont Walmart to Downtown Canton route beginning September 22, 2025, due to ongoing road construction projects.
- The City of Canton is also working on pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements along Cleveland Avenue between 8th and 12th streets, including new 10-foot sidewalks and shared use paths replacing bike lanes, enhanced street lighting, and improved crosswalk safety measures. Construction is expected in 2025 and will have minimal impact on adjacent properties.
- Meanwhile, SARTA is introducing federally funded anti-collision technology on buses in September to improve safety for drivers and passengers across the service area, including Canton.
Residents using public transit should prepare for these route eliminations, detours, and service modifications, and consider alternative transportation options during affected hours. The city encourages public input on infrastructure projects and transit service changes to better meet community needs.
