The Mayor of Canton, Ohio, recently announced a series of significant infrastructure projects set for 2025 aimed at improving the city’s roadways, bridges, stormwater systems, and green spaces. These investments highlight Canton’s commitment to modernizing essential public infrastructure and enhancing residents’ quality of life.
A major focus is the city’s $3.9 million 2025 Paving Program, which is part of a larger $16.5 million investment allocated to maintaining and upgrading roadways across all four quadrants of Canton. This program includes resurfacing and improvements on neighborhood streets, key business corridors, and high-traffic areas. Work is scheduled throughout summer and fall, with the city providing a GIS map for residents to easily track paving locations and timelines.
Besides road paving, bridge replacements and rehabilitations are underway, including the $2.2 million replacement of the 15th St SW Bridge over the West Branch Nimishillen Creek, expected to be completed by summer 2025. Additionally, the Belden Ave Bridge NE is slated for rehabilitation between Mahoning Rd NE and Ira Turpin Way NE.
Storm sewer projects will upgrade drainage along Bernard Ave NW, Edgefield Ave NW (phased construction), and other locations to address flooding and infrastructure wear. These projects improve water flow, reduce flooding risk, and protect neighborhoods.
Canton is also investing in green infrastructure projects. The Middle Branch Greenspace Area project aims to conserve land within the floodplain of the Nimishillen Creek, enhancing both ecological health and recreational access. The Urban Forest Revitalization Project, funded in part by a federal grant, will expand tree canopy coverage in disadvantaged neighborhoods to promote environmental justice and community well-being.
Additional planned projects include a citywide fiber optic cable installation to enhance digital infrastructure, targeted sanitary sewer replacements, and streetscape enhancements along key corridors like 11th St SE, East Tusc, and 6th St NW to improve aesthetics and pedestrian safety.
Overall, Canton’s infrastructure plan for 2025 reflects a comprehensive approach to modernizing aging systems, enhancing public safety, and promoting sustainability. These projects are expected to benefit residents, businesses, and visitors by providing safer roads, bridges, and utilities, along with improved green spaces for recreation and environmental health. The continued investment underscores the city’s priorities in fostering long-term growth, connectivity, and livability for all neighborhoods.
