Avon Lake, Ohio — The Avon Lake Police Department is collaborating with Project ChildSafe to provide free gun locks and firearm safety education materials to the public in an effort to promote responsible gun ownership and reduce the risk of accidents.
Anyone, resident or not, can pick up free gun locks from the Avon Lake Police Department’s dispatch window. The program is part of a larger national initiative that emphasizes the importance of securely storing firearms when not in use to avoid accidents, theft, misuse, and suicide.
Project ChildSafe has worked with thousands of law enforcement agencies across the country to promote responsible gun ownership and safe firearm storage at home.
According to the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Violence Solutions’ 2024 report, gun death rates in the United States among children aged 1 to 17 have increased by 106% since 2013. Firearms have been the leading cause of death among American children and teenagers since 2020.
