Audit finds inmate fully accountable for Ross Correctional Officer's death

COLUMBUS, Ohio — According to an incident audit into the fatal attack on a Ross Correctional Officer, Rashawn Cannon of Lima is solely responsible for the officer’s death.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections has released its findings in the 2024 Christmas Day attack on Officer Andrew Lansing. According to the report, staffing levels at Ross Correctional Institute, Cannon’s inmate classification, and equipment were all in order when Cannon deviated from a group going to eat and beat Lansing to death in a guard shack in the courtyard.

Cannon was serving time in prison after being convicted of felonious assault in Allen County in 2023.

Since the attack, Ross Correctional Institute has added officers and upgraded its equipment. Cannon was transferred to a higher-security prison and faces three counts of aggravated murder. If convicted, he may face the death penalty.
