GENOA, Ohio — An out-of-state 16-year-old boy appeared to drown Wednesday in Genoa Quarry at Veterans Park in Ottawa County, according to fire officials.
According to Capt. Andy Klinger, public information officer for the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District, the official cause of death is pending an autopsy. Officials did not release the teen’s name or address.
The boy’s family members, who were with him at the quarry, called 911 at 4:07 p.m. to report him missing, according to Captain Klinger.
Firefighters arrived on the scene at 4:11 p.m. and searched the water and surrounding area.
Quarry lifeguards and dive teams from local fire departments also searched the water. The teen’s body was discovered at 5:39 p.m. and recovered from the water at 5:42 p.m., he stated.
“We are incredibly grateful for the partnership and rapid deployment of these dive teams,” said Fire Chief Mike Musolf of the Allen-Clay Joint Fire District, in an announcement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the young man’s family and friends during this heartbreaking time.”
The Jerusalem Township Dive Team, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, and the Toledo Fire & Rescue Dive Team all assisted with the search.
The Genoa Police Department, Clay Township Police Department, Elmore Police Department, Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and Village of Genoa staff all assisted the local fire department on scene.
