SANDUSKY, Ohio — Heavy rain turned parts of Cedar Point into shallow pools on Monday, July 28, as severe storms swept through Sandusky, Ohio. The National Weather Service in Cleveland issued a flash flood warning for Erie County at 5:02 p.m., with up to 3 inches of rain already recorded and another 2 inches expected. Children were pictured on social media playing in ankle-deep water near the park’s main entrance and along walkways inside.
“There were a few areas of the peninsula with higher levels of water due to the rain, but they tend to recede shortly after storms,” a Cedar Point spokesperson told Fox 8 Cleveland. By late evening, drainage systems had cleared the majority of the standing water, and no major damage or injuries had been reported.
Videos circulating online showed guests splashing through puddles and swimming in the pools of water flowing through the park, eliciting mixed reactions. One person said, “Forget the haters. This is incredible!!! “Live in the moment.”
Others shared similar sentiments, writing, “It’s kids being kids … lol,” and “Now that’s how you make the most of a bad situation.” Some visitors expressed concern about the water quality. One Cedar Point fan wrote, “All of the spit, bird poop, literally everything nasty I can think of on that pavement!,” while another simply said, “Diabolical.”
Despite the online divide, several visitors described the flooding as an unexpected memory-making opportunity.
Cedar Point had resumed normal operations by early Tuesday, with the park noting that flooding caused by heavy storms is usually temporary and resolves quickly.
