A Florida man accused of stealing a tour train and picking up passengers while high on methamphetamine later told police it was his birthday.
According to an arrest report obtained by local ABC affiliate WPLG, on July 4, police responded to reports of a stolen train from the Conch Tour Train Depot in Key West. The vehicle was being tracked throughout the city by the GPS monitor attached to it. When officers arrived, employees reported that a man had arrived at the depot, claiming to be a former employee. The man asked for a tour of the Conch Train, and an employee agreed. The man then allegedly drove off the property in the Conch Train.
Jonathan Patrick Winslow was celebrating his 57th birthday.
According to the arrest report, Winslow left his Kia at the depot while it was still running “with rock music playing on the radio.”
Winslow’s alleged joy ride was brief, lasting only long enough for him to pick up “two random passengers” who may not have realized their Conch Train conductor was unauthorized. According to police, Winslow left the train at some point and was later found without incident. They quickly found Winslow, who was reportedly “excited” and speaking rapidly.
Officers informed Winslow that he would face charges for taking the Conch Train, to which he reportedly replied that he had just “borrowed” it and that “today [was] his birthday.”
According to the arrest report, police were unconvinced by the evidence and took Winslow to jail. During the search, police discovered what they described as a meth pipe. Winslow reportedly said, “It’s a weed pipe!”
Not quite.
Winslow faced charges of burglary, theft, and misdemeanor possession of drug equipment. He is being held at the Monroe County Jail on a $60,000 bond. His next court date is set for July 17.
