Akron Mayor Shammas Malik recently announced a comprehensive set of new infrastructure projects for 2025, backed by a $380 million-plus capital budget approved unanimously by the City Council.
Key highlights include:
- Water and Sewer Upgrades:Â More than half the budget targets water and sewer improvements, including $141 million for sewer projects like the Northside Interceptor Tunnel to overhaul outdated systems and comply with federal environmental mandates. The Lead Service Line Replacement Program will continue to replace remaining active lead pipes, with a goal of completing by the end of 2025.
- Transportation Enhancements:Â $49.5 million is allocated for road projects including resurfacing, subbase repair, and a road diet on North Main Street aimed at safer and more accessible streets meeting ADA standards. Additional funds support speed reduction measures and the annual road resurfacing program.
- Parks and Recreation:Â The budget dedicates funds for modernizing community centers, adding gaming/e-sports rooms, and upgrading HVAC systems at Firestone Park and Joy Park Community Centers.
- Public Facilities:Â Investments include restroom upgrades at Canal Park Stadium, extensive parking deck rehabilitation and maintenance, and safety improvements to city parking structures.
- Community and Housing:Â Affordable housing remains a priority through units construction and rehabilitation efforts, minor home repairs for vulnerable populations, vacant lot infill projects, and lead paint remediation programs. Funding also supports homeless shelters and demolition of dilapidated properties.
- Public Safety and Vehicles:Â Replacement of aging police, fire, and service vehicles, along with the acquisition of a mobile communication center to enhance emergency response capabilities.
This infrastructure initiative reflects Mayor Malik’s strategies focused on improving neighborhoods’ livability, community resources, and modernizing vital systems to promote a safer, healthier Akron. The city also holds open houses for public feedback on projects like the Interbelt redevelopment, emphasizing community engagement in shaping Akron’s future.
