A homicide investigation has begun at the California Correctional Institution prison following the death of an inmate this week.
According to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, 26-year-old inmate Malik Campbell was found responsive in his cell on Tuesday afternoon. Campbell died a little more than a half-hour later, according to officials.
According to CDCR, no weapon was found at the scene, but the incident is being investigated as a homicide, and Campbell’s cellmate, 29-year-old Donte Walker, has been placed in restricted housing.
The Kern County Coroner will investigate Campbell’s exact cause of death. According to prison officials, Campbell was serving a 26-year sentence for voluntary manslaughter in San Diego County, with several enhancements.
Walker is serving a four-year sentence in Sacramento County for second-strike, second-degree robbery. In addition, he was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in Placer County.
