A man in Italy is facing manslaughter charges after allegedly attempting suicide by jumping from a building and fatally striking a woman below.

Local media have identified the victim as Francesca Manno, aged 83.

On Sunday, September 14, emergency services arrived at Manno’s residence in Milan, Italy, and pronounced him dead, according to Italian news outlets Rai News, Il Post, and Il Mattino, as well as Italian news agency Ansa.

According to the investigation, Manno died after a 70-year-old man who lived in her building jumped from his balcony in an apparent suicide attempt.

The man jumped from the fourth floor to the courtyard where Manno was walking.

While it was initially thought to be a double suicide by a couple, it quickly became clear that Manno had no connection to the suspect, who survived the incident, according to Corriere della Sera. The man is not being identified in Italian media. According to reports, he was hospitalized after suffering multiple leg fractures.

Local authorities charged the suspect with manslaughter, according to Rai News, ANSA, and Corriere della Sera.

Manno lived in the building with her husband, according to a woman who has known her for five decades, Rai News reports.

Manno rarely left the house, the woman told the outlet.

According to Corriere della Sera, she was hit head on, and the impact was extremely violent, as reported by Rai News.

Her autopsy will be performed within the next few days, according to ANSA.
