A car accident in Ohio claimed one life

OHIO — According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 92-year-old man from Van Wert died Tuesday afternoon in a collision with a semi-truck on U.S. Route 224.

The accident happened at 1:04 p.m. at the intersection of Van Wert-Decatur Road and U.S. 224 in Pleasant Township. According to authorities, John J. Freund was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to preliminary findings, Freund was attempting to turn left onto US 224 from Van Wert-Decatur Road when he failed to yield to oncoming traffic.

His 2015 GMC Terrain was hit by a 2022 Volvo semi-truck driven by Adnan Perenda, 51, of Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The crash is still under investigation.

Several agencies responded to the scene, including the Van Wert Police Department, Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office, Van Wert Fire Department, Van Wert County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Van Wert County Emergency Management Agency, CERT, and Hague Towing and Repair.
