Los Angeles — Firefighters were able to halt the Lake Fire near Victorville, California, but the blaze continues to burn.

According to Cal Fire, the fire began just before 4 p.m. PT on June 28 and spread to 478 acres by midnight. In a morning update on June 29, Cal Fire stated that they had achieved 10% containment.

“Fire behaviour significantly decreased overnight allowing for ground and air resources to gain some containment,” the California Fire Department reported. “The fire has remained in its current footprint and today’s resources will continue to mop up and strengthen containment lines, while active working to defend structures.”

The weather is expected to turn unfavourable over the next two days, with low humidity and winds gusting up to 25 mph Sunday afternoon and stronger gusts on June 30.

Fire closes state recreation area, prompts evacuation orders

Residents south of Highway 138, between Interstate 15 and Highway 173, have been issued evacuation orders. Warnings were also issued north of Highway 138 and 173, from Summit Valley Road to Arrowhead Lake Road.

The fire also forced the Silverwood State Recreation Area to close until at least Sunday.

“The park may reopen Monday, June 30 after re-evaluation,” officials said in a written statement.

Escorts were scheduled for park visitors and campers who rented the park to retrieve belongings after 9 a.m. Sunday.
