Hazardous Fog Creates Dangerous Travel Conditions in Central Illinois

Drivers in central Illinois are facing challenging travel conditions this morning as patchy dense fog reduces visibility to less than a quarter-mile in some areas. The fog is expected to improve by mid-morning, but caution is still advised for those traveling early.

Areas Affected by Dense Fog

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, areas along and south of I-72, including Springfield, Litchfield, Effingham, and portions of I-55, are seeing reduced visibility due to the fog. The worst conditions are in regions near Quincy, Jacksonville, and Vandalia, where roadways like I-72 and I-70 are most impacted. Drivers in these areas should expect sudden drops in visibility, especially on rural roads and in low-lying areas.

Safety Tips for Drivers

To stay safe in foggy conditions, the NWS advises drivers to use low-beam headlights, slow down, and maintain extra following distance. The fog can be especially dangerous in the early hours, making it harder to see other vehicles or road hazards.

This is the first significant fog event of June, a reminder that even in the summer months, fog can still present a risk to drivers. Visibility will gradually improve after 9 a.m., but it’s important to check local traffic reports and allow extra time for your journey. If conditions worsen, more advisories may be issued.
